Engels Will Smith plays a slave flees to freedom and his family. A swamp of danger awaits him, with Ben Foster breathing down his neck, but his desire for freedom is stronger than any obstacle he faces. This potentially interesting historical drama offers some quite telling scenes and solid action, but audiovisually it is unremittingly repulsive. It gets increasingly boring as it progresses, and by the end it becomes downright annoying. Antoine Fuqua should stick to action films and tame his ambitions, he's not cut out for this. ()

Engels Antoine Fuqua's films just don't do it for me anymore. He used to make solid, dynamic movies, but nowadays, the dynamism seems to have vanished. He still casts great actors, but the atmosphere, with that drab gray filter, could bore even an elephant. It's a shame because it's clear he's trying to match the quality of 12 Years a Slave, but it just doesn't hit the mark. ()
