Anatomy of a Scandal

I was hoping for another Defending Jacob, but there is no such pleasure and in the end Anatomy of a Scandal is actually "just" average. The best thing here, but paradoxically also a biggest issue, is the complete straightforwardness of the series, which is practically nonstop in the courtroom from the first minutes, setting in motion the gradual unraveling of the story and the dark past, the 6x40 running that is cut down to literally only the bare essentials to the plot, and thus it’s fast-paced. But at the same time, there is drastically little time to get to know the characters, emotionally connect or absorb information, and so you more or less sort of skim the series rather than fully experiencing it, squirming nervously in your seat. The acting is average, likewise the script, the characters are not that interesting and the finale is quite expected and unsurprising. I like the fairly clear-cut message the creators want to convey, as well as the story, which can be seen as setting up a mirror to the society of wealthy elitist individuals and their virtually unlimited freedom, but I still got a kind of "meh" feeling when it was over. So far, a bland start that hasn't laid its cards out yet and hasn't really shown much of anything in 50 minutes, so we can only hope that the series will be more impactful in the next episodes. Let's be surprised. (19.04.2022)
