An infamous manga artist received an unmarked parcel in the mail. In this mysterious package was one 8 mm film, 54 still pictures and a 19 page letter. The letter told the artist that a horrible crime was committed by a person of aesthetic paranoia in a very secret place. The 8mm film shows a horrifying descent into pure madness as a psychotic slowly dismembers a defenseless woman and then adds her to his collection. The artist quickly turned the film, stills and letter over to the police for investigation. Haunted by the images he witnessed, he decided to make a semi-documentary film based on what he saw. Engels Given that the series is nearly 30 years old, I must acknowledge its potential for its time. However, in the present, when the boundaries of what is depicted have been pushed even further, this killer in samurai armor is simply one film among many, lacking anything particularly remarkable. The lack of plot doesn’t help much; we’re essentially stuck in one room throughout, except for the opening scene where the murdered girl is abducted. As I mentioned, with a static camera, this whole thing would come across differently. ()
