Wayne vertolkt de rancher Taw Jackson, een man die zijn zinnen heeft gezet op de zwaarbewaakte, gepantserde postkoets van een arrogante veebaron. Die achterbakse dief heeft hem jaren geleden niet alleen zijn hebben en houden ontnomen, maar ook zijn reputatie besmeurd. When two actors - two personas - who have nothing in common and have no problem expressing it loudly to each other come together, either there will be trouble or a situation where you will look forward to every dialogue between them. And since I enjoyed every encounter of theirs here, the second option is what I see. The mutual contradiction was absolutely palpable. They just clashed with each other. And thanks to that, they made this western literally an entertaining matter.

When two actors click, it's simply a joy to watch. That's exactly the case with The War Wagon, where Kirk Douglas and John Wayne joined forces. A truly excellent pairing, especially in how these two could command the screen. They're precisely the cowboys you want to go on an adventure with. And that's what happens. Entertaining and pleasantly light-hearted.

A pleasant film. It’s not challenging, I liked how it mixes typical western elements with classic elements of heist films, the John Wayne and Kirk Douglas duo, Tiomkin's music… And cute humour. Three and a half stars.
