The Maze (2016) (S01)

Engels The first season really blew my mind. Each character seemed to live and die in their own storyline, until I suddenly realized that they lived and died in multiple storylines within the park and still get to experience the same in real life in the labs of society. Let me tell you it's a pretty depressing experience for artificial intelligence that is becoming self-aware. The whole season was quite strange. At times it was low-key fun, and at other times a drama of unsuspected depth. Except for a few weak moments, it was a great show. What an ending. ()

The Original (2016) (S01E01)

Engels The first episode throws you right into the action without much explanation, but luckily, the story starts to unfold before you get completely lost. I was struck by the contrast between the calm, sterile labs and the brutal, wild west scenes, with brains getting blown out left and right. It all comes together perfectly. And sure, I know "Paint It Black," but I've never heard it played like that before. ()

Chestnut (2016) (S01E02)

Engels I'm still hooked. The story is unfolding nicely, raising more questions with each twist, though I sense answers are on the horizon. The behavior of the Westworld visitors reminds me a lot of certain zoo visitors who bring fruit with razor blades or throw rocks at gorillas whenever they get the chance. ()

The Stray (2016) (S01E03)

Engels The third episode felt a bit uneven. I was fully engaged during the action scenes, but the rest of the storyline felt a bit dull and left me slightly bored. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy the episode, it just seemed a star weaker compared to the previous two. ()

Dissonance Theory (2016) (S01E04)

Engels Episode four kept me hooked from start to finish. I started getting some answers to the many questions the series has raised so far, and there was another fantastic shootout with brilliant music. Absolutely loved it! ()

Contrapasso (2016) (S01E05)

Engels The fifth episode is far more revealing — literally, given the minimal use of costumes. The plot is becoming clearer, as are the thought processes of some robo-residents. I just hope future episodes focus more on developing the storyline rather than on nudity. ()

The Adversary (2016) (S01E06)

Engels This highly conspiratorial episode had me thoroughly entertained — exactly the kind of plot I enjoy. The story has branched out so much that there's no way to fit all the characters and their arcs into a single episode. Paranoia is ramping up among the characters, and honestly, who can blame them? ()

Trompe L'Oeil (2016) (S01E07)

Engels Episode seven was fantastic, offering up a bunch of intriguing answers and a plot twist that caught me completely off guard. I was ready for a twist, but I expected something entirely different. So, I'm pleasantly surprised and thoroughly impressed! ()

Trace Decay (2016) (S01E08)

Engels A bit weaker compared to the last episode, but I'm really enjoying Maeve's storyline, so it's all good. This episode clearly serves as a setup for the big finale, and I really hope it delivers. If the creators let the ending fizzle out, I'd be seriously annoyed. But hey, I guess they wouldn't care much! :) ()

The Well-Tempered Clavier (2016) (S01E09)

Engels A pretty solid episode, answering a lot of key questions. But something felt a bit off, like I was expecting a little more. I guess I'll have to wait for the season finale and hope it delivers everything I'm looking for. ()

The Bicameral Mind (2016) (S01E10)

Engels A great way to wrap up the first season! I was worried it might be rushed or end on a clichéd "evil is punished and everyone lives happily ever after" note. Instead, it was packed with twists, and the very end was fantastic. Plus, we finally got to see William confront the mysterious Wyatt. ()

The Door (2018) (S02)

Engels Compared to the first season, it was a disappointment. There were plenty of action scenes, but they often fell flat because they were written just for effect without any bearing on the story itself. The story, in turn, often drowned in deep philosophical thought, thus losing momentum. There was a significant decline in quality in comparison to the first season. ()

Journey Into Night (2018) (S02E01)

Engels Season 2 seamlessly picked up from the action-packed finale of the previous season. William shook off the dead weight, literally, and re-entered the story with his unique brand of empathy. This was hands down the best part — Westworld just wouldn’t be the same without this villain. ()

Reunion (2018) (S02E02)

Engels The second episode delved deep into the past, revealing lots of fascinating details about the park's beginnings. Honestly, I enjoyed this trip down memory lane more than the present-day action, which felt a bit slow. William, of course, was the exception — he never gets old. ()

Virtù e Fortuna (2018) (S02E03)

Engels For the first time, I rated a Westworld episode less than four stars, and it was for two main reasons. First, the middle of the episode felt a bit slow and sleepy, with too much philosophizing. Second, the absence of Ed Harris was a noticeable drawback. However, "Eastworld" and the battle for the fort still delivered the usual high quality. ()

The Riddle of the Sphinx (2018) (S02E04)

Engels This episode was a huge step up in quality for me. While the existential musings in the previous episode didn’t quite grab me, the storyline with James Delos in this one was incredibly engaging. Ed Harris had plenty of screen time, the atmosphere was spot on, and there was enough action to keep me entertained. Overall, I really enjoyed it. ()

Akane No Mai (2018) (S02E05)

Engels Another visit to "Eastworld"! I have a soft spot for Japan, even if it’s the Americanized version. The events in "Shogunworld" were definitely more entertaining than Dolores and Teddy’s storyline, which is starting to get a bit dull for me. Plus, that ear thing was really bizarre! ()

Phase Space (2018) (S02E06)

Engels I'm getting tired of Dolores' group's journey, and Maeve with her imaginary daughter is starting to annoy me. Thankfully, Ed Harris saved the day again. William's daughter added some intrigue to his storyline, and for once, I'm actually curious about what Bernard will bring back from the data stream. ()

Les Écorchés (2018) (S02E07)

Engels I'd have thought I'd give a five-star rating after such an action-packed episode, but no. Westworld just doesn't hit the same way it did in the first season. While all the action scenes were well-executed, they seemed to mask the increasing flaws in the storyline. 4*- ()

Kiksuya (2018) (S02E08)

Engels This episode dialed back on the frantic shooting, and if it had just focused on the Native American story, I would’ve added an extra star. Unfortunately, they ruined William's character for me. Despite taking multiple nearly half-inch projectiles, he acted like someone who'd just had a rough night at the bar. That was a bit too much for me. ()
