De film speelt zich af rond het ruimtestation Death Star, dat in staat is om een hele planeet te vernietigen. Luke Skywalker werkt bij z'n oom en tante op de planeet Tatooine, die door Keizerlijke troepen vermoord worden. Luke sluit zich aan bij de groep rebellen die vecht tegen de tirannie van de Keizer en de slechte Darth Vader.
