Criminal: UK (2019)

Engels In this case, Netflix aimed to offer something that, while frequently seen in the film industry (crime genre), is not presented in this particular way. Although I initially wouldn't have thought that solving criminal cases solely in an interrogation room could be compelling, I ended up being almost thrilled. It’s more of a conversational drama, where every line of dialogue is emphasized, so even in this minimalist approach, viewers are well catered to. It provides a substantial amount of tension, the actors deliver more than decent performances, and the cases themselves are portrayed with a great deal of variety. From my perspective, it's pure satisfaction. We'll see how it fares in other countries, but I can wholeheartedly recommend the UK segment. I give it 80% (more details on each episode are written under the individual episodes). ()

Edgar (2019) (S01E01)

Engels An interesting take on the crime genre, where the investigation of murders essentially stays within the interrogation room, unfolding into a solid conversational and minimalist drama. The first story intrigued me primarily because of the excellent David Tennant. The script is cleverly written, and I thoroughly enjoyed every dialogue with the camera focused either on the detectives or the suspect. And the final resolution, backed by impactful music? It's unconventional but effective, and an attractive ending for me as a viewer. We'll see what comes next. I give it 83%. ()

Stacey (2019) (S01E02)

Engels The second installment, while ultimately weaker, still leaves me with mostly positive feelings. The atmosphere-building to the point of chilling remains a crucial element here. However, the plot itself didn’t captivate me as much as the story about Edgar; it felt rather straightforward and less thought-out. Nevertheless, I acknowledge that Hayley Atwell’s convincingly emotional performance reinforced my belief that a solid 70% is still warranted. ()

Jay (2019) (S01E03)

Engels The third and final episode presents a story about a truck and several migrants. I found it more engaging than the second episode, perhaps also because the main investigator role is played by Detective Constable Hugo Duffy. Thanks to him, the third episode matched the quality of the first one. The plot itself, involving a race against time and human lives, isn’t particularly innovative, but the style of this series turns even a normal and mundane premise into an incredibly addictive affair. I give it 83%. ()

Season 2 (2020) (S02)

Engels The second season learned from its mistakes and delivered a truly exquisite viewing experience in every way. Each story is spiced up with a solid dose of twists (especially episodes 2 and 4 are pure 10/10 for me). It's unbelievable how filmmakers can create such a complex plot filled with emotions in just 40 minutes (and, ladies and gentlemen, it all takes place in a single interrogation room). On top of that, there's a likable cast for the entire detective team. Yes, I want a third season. And I want it now! A HIDDEN GEM on Netflix! 9/10. P.S. If anyone still doubts Kit Harington’s acting talent after this spectacular performance in episode 2, I really don’t know what to think about that person. And Kunal Nayyar blew me away with his portrayal of the killer :O ()

Julia (2020) (S02E01)

Engels That plot twist got me :D What started as an innocently looking episode turned into solid filmmaking with high-quality dialogues. For me, it's 8.5/10. ()

Alex (2020) (S02E02)

Engels And they say Kit Harington can't act! His 5-minute monologue at the beginning of the episode convinced me of what a talent he is! The well-handled theme of rape accusations with a powerful ending. For me, it's 9/10. ()

Danielle (2020) (S02E03)

Engels It's like when you have originally good intentions, but your efforts end up going as badly as possible. The second season offers a more consistent experience. I grew to really like the British cast over the two seasons. 8/10 ()
