Nightmare Detective 2 presents empathy and love, i.e. the values set forth at the end of the first Nightmare Detective, as the antithesis of the fear of others. Rather than being a traditional two-part series, the Nightmare Detective diptych is a pair of similar, thematically connected works such as Tsukamoto’s films about suicide, where the bleak and heavily physical Haze is balanced by the meditatively uplifting and emotionally ecstatic Vital.
